Resource Stewardship & Energy Management- Fueling the Journey

Resource Stewardship & Energy Management: Fueling the Journey
Our 3-Prong Effort That Supports UN Sustainable Development Goal #7

Our planet is so large and bountiful and our everyday lives so busy, that it’s easy to forget that the resources we use each day are not limitless or accessible to all. That’s why we keep a sharp eye on the natural resources we use and the energy we harness as your print communications partner. The fourth principle in the EarthColor Sustainability EcoSystem is Resource Stewardship & Energy Management. It’s also a key component of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #7: “To ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.”

At EarthColor, we continuously look for ways to reduce and manage the consumption of water, natural gas and electricity in our manufacturing and administrative operations and to seek out new sustainable and renewable energy resources. Since 2008, when we began to aggressively monitor and measure our carbon footprint, we have succeeded in reducing our usage of these resources by 33% (water), 17.6% (natural gas) and 21.9% (electricity).

Our current level of water consumption remains steady due in large part to the strategies and efficiencies of our water management initiatives, now in place throughout our offices and manufacturing facilities.

At the same time, our standard energy usage continues to decline as we seek out and implement renewable energy resources. We currently offset ALL of our energy requirements for production, manufacturing and administrative operations through the purchase of Green-e® Energy-certified wind-generated Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). In 2014 alone, that equaled 26 million kilowatt hours, equal to 107% of our total energy usage. As reported in our 2015-2016 Sustainability Report, we also succeeded in reducing our overall usage of electricity by 8.3% and of natural gas by 7.9%.

The UN’s goals for sustainable energy are to substantially increase the percentage of renewable energy usage and to double the rate of energy efficiencies and availability worldwide by 2030. We are committed to contributing to that effort by working with all of our partners to help achieve them.
