What Size Is Your Footprint?

Find Out by Using Our Sustainability Calculator

As your print partner, we’ve got your back. We know you want to minimize the environmental impact of your print communications. We know it’s important to keep your footprint as small as possible.

We wholeheartedly agree. That’s why we developed our patent-pending Earth Savings Estimator – a sustainability simulator on our website that helps you make a greener choice in paper or plastic for your next project. By varying size, weight, quantity, and percentage of recycled content, you can get an early indication of your environmental footprint and what you can do to decrease it. Here’s how it works.

Paper Calculations: The illustration below shows what you will need to provide: paper height and width in inches; paper weight in pounds; percentage of recycled fiber; number of pages and pieces; type of paper (coated or uncoated); and FSC®/SFI® certified and carbon balanced. The results yield an approximate savings based on the best text weight of paper choices.

Plastic Calculations: If your communications will be printed on plastic, you will need to provide: the height and weight of the plastic component, measured in inches; the number of pieces to be produced; and the percentage of recycled content – 25%, 50% or 100%.

We base our calculations on the weight of recycled RPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate) and the amount of post-consumer recycling of materials at our facilities. We used average samples of 500 ml of plastic water bottles and savings realized from using 100% renewable energy credits (RECs) at our facilities.

Once you’ve made your choice and reviewed the results of the calculations and the overall specs of the job with your EarthColor sales representative, we go to work.

Using our eco-engineering workflow and products, we determine the most efficient and environmentally sound approach to achieve minimum impact. We do our own round of sustainability calculations using proprietary software with algorithms that track, measure and evaluate a variety of data. We factor in all the elements that will produce the most sustainable result: source of materials; recycled content; exact quantity and weight of paper or plastic; inks, coatings and chemicals to be used; projected hours of production and energy use; airborne emissions; and solid waste produced. This step is mission critical to quantifying the savings your project will accrue to ensure a sustainable eco-footprint.
