When it comes to your graphic communications, we’re all about the bottom line. As your Print Partner, we strive to create a business framework where sound environmental practices and solid financial outcomes go hand in hand. By continually developing sustainable print solutions that are also cost-effective, we can work together to make a lasting impact on the quality of life on our planet. We keep these goals front and center throughout the supply chain and manufacturing process.
The newest guiding principle of the EarthColor eco-system is sustainable supply chains, which encompass the lifecycle of your print communications from beginning to end. We partner with you to define and develop what it means to be environmentally responsible, applying principles of eco-engineering to manage and strengthen every link in the supply chain.
It starts with innovative design and engineering solutions that refine, retool or re-imagine your print project to shorten or reduce your eco-signature. Next we apply responsible procurement practices to ensure that raw materials meet chain-of-custody safeguards. That’s why the paper products we use are sourced from managed forests and certified to meet international standards (FSC®, SFI® and/or PEFC™). Plastic components must also meet PET/RPET standards for sustainability. We also make sure to procure paper and plastic with pre and post consumer content to minimize your carbon footprint. We follow the same course in the development of inks, coatings and chemicals used in the printing process, adapting the 12 principles of green chemistry to guide us. As a result, we can provide inks and coatings that are recyclable, and we have reduced or eliminated VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and HAPs (hazardous air pollutants) in our manufacturing process.
We pay particular attention to our recycling and end of life cycle management program in all of our facilities. In 2014, we recycled nearly all (99.5 percent) of our post-industrial paper waste (PIW). That’s the equivalent to 280,000 fewer trees harvested due to recycling and the use of PCW and PCI recycled content.
The final step is our sustainable transport & logistics management program, which incorporates the EPA’s SmartWay® initiative. The goal of this program is to improve fuel efficiency and reduce both greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants, delivering your print communications to you via the most sustainable route. Currently, 65 percent of EarthColor carriers are SmartWay partners, and we intend to up the ante each year.
All of these factors combine to reduce the impact of your print communications on the environment. As the chart below attests, our sustainable print capabilities helped our clients make a measurable difference in energy and resource usage in 2014.
With careful planning and collaboration, you can ensure that your next project with EarthColor meets both sustainable and cost-effective criteria. To facilitate the process, we’ve developed a tool to help you measure the potential environmental savings of your print communications based on the paper you select. Our patent pending Earth Savings Estimator calculates a number of factors that can impact your eco-footprint – paper type, weight and size; number of pages and pieces; recycled content; and FSC/SFI certification and carbon balance. To use the calculator, visit http://earthcolor.com/sustainability/earth-savings-calculator/ to see how you can do your part to help protect the environment.
Ultimately, the bottom line is our partnership to protect and preserve the resources of this planet we call home, efficiently and cost-effectively for generations to come.
