When you initiate sustainability programs in your workplace, you not only instill environmentally friendly practices within the organization, you begin a journey that will have far-reaching implications for your business. Sustainability is a concept that extends far beyond the walls of a business. It is part of a worldwide movement that involves communities and organizations working together to help preserve and maintain the world’s ecosystem.
Sustainability is defined as a system that “creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations.”
Over ten years ago, EarthColor decided to expand its sustainability efforts beyond the traditional “going green” approach. What began as recycling materials and utilizing soy based ink soon expanded to re-engineering our manufacturing processes to promote sustainable practices within our facilities. Subsequently EarthColor broadened its focus, partnering with established organizations, to promote our mutual efforts related to sustainable resourcing and responsible forestry programs. In short, we believe that we have a responsibility to protect, partner and promote sustainable practices in order to maintain the earth for future generations.
We believe that sustainability involves protecting the resources that support our business. First, we use environmentally friendly products in a sustainable manner so that we can continue preserving the Earth for future generations. We also understand that our active efforts in protecting physical resources extend beyond our organization and involve the communities and cultures that support and produce that product. For example, we participate and advocate for programs that promote sustainable forestry practices.
We partner with our clients and suppliers to build comprehensive supply chains that minimize our environmental impact. We source environmentally friendly materials and seek to ensure that our products are delivered to our clients in the most efficient and sustainable manner. We also partner with environmental non-government organizations (ENGOs) to participate and support their sustainability programs in the areas of sustainable graphic communications, protecting endangered species and preserving forests around the world.
Education is key to building awareness of sustainable business practices. We are partnering with ENGOs to help educate communities and businesses on ways to build sustainable practices into their day-to-day activities. We’ve conducted tours showcasing our current sustainability efforts and innovations such as incorporating agricultural residue fiber into paper substrates. We are proud advocates for the sustainability movement within the printing industry and do what we can to extend our reach to inspire and promote it.
We are strong believers that humans and nature can exist in productive harmony for the benefit of present and future generations. We are working for the betterment of the environment and for a greener earth. By incorporating sustainable practices into our business and using it as a model to guide our efforts, we have made progress on this ongoing journey. In recognition of this vision, we selected “Protect. Partner. Promote.” as the theme for our Sustainability Report which highlights our continuing efforts. Click here to receive a copy of our report.
