Parsippany, NJ, April 23, 2012 – EarthColor, Inc. is proud to announce that we are a winner of the 4th annual WhatTheyThink Environmental Innovation Awards in the category of Environmental Sustainability and Your Community.
EarthColor is no stranger to these awards – we were last year’s winner in the Beyond Sustainability category – and this year we are excited to be awarded the top honors in the “Community” category for our corporate social responsibility and community outreach program which includes: our participation in MACED’s Appalachian Carbon Partnership which supports responsible forest management in Central Appalachia; our partnership with Canopy which serves to actively promote and assist in responsible resource procurement in the paper and print industry; our educational outreach efforts on the sustainability of print and paper; and our collaboration with supply chain partners’ in support of local community youth programs.
EarthColor’s purchase of carbon offsets through the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development’s (MACED) Appalachian Carbon Partnership supports responsible forest management in Central Appalachia. Since partnering with MACED, EarthColor has purchased 4,000 metric tons of carbon offsets. The money from the offsets goes directly to family forest owners who have made long-term commitments to practice sustainable forest management, providing a financial incentive to maintain their forests. In addition, the purchase of carbon offsets helps EarthColor to reduce its carbon footprint – in 2011, the purchase of carbon offsets alone helped us to reduce our carbon footprint by 38%.
Our partnership with Canopy serves to actively promote and assist in responsible resource procurement in the print and paper industry. With Canopy’s guidance, we have established an Ancient Forest Stewardship Policy, which supports the protection of ancient and endangered forests. Also, we have been actively involved in providing third-party knowledge and expertise to assist in the development of comprehensive forest resource policies among printers.
EarthColor’s partnership with Two Sides has allowed us increase engagement and discourse of the economic, social and environmental benefits of print and paper based on reliable facts serving to promote positive change within our industry and supply chain. We have also been invited to be a sitting member on the Two Sides Sustainability Committee which offers opportunities for valuable dialogue and interaction with industry peers on sustainability issues as well as exchange of best practices.
In addition, in collaboration with supply chain partners, EarthColor’s wood pallet recycling efforts in 2011 resulted in saving over 3,000 mature trees and the donation of over 400 baseballs to local NJ Little League teams. Also, our own sponsorship of local community children’s sports programs serves to promote sports for children with the aim of motivating them to continue to play while helping EarthColor to be a good neighbor to the communities in which we operate.
